So far, Romans speaks of what Paul found to be the truth, in the past tense. Every underlined statement shows that He has already found his complete freedom from law and sin, past tense.

To understand Romans 7:14-25, we must understand the historical present voice, which employs the present tense in narrating past events. Literary critics and grammarians claim that the historical present has the effect of making past events more vivid.

Notice how the verbs in the following excerpt from Charles Dickens’ novel, David Copperfield, shift from the past tense to the historical present, giving the reader the sense of being there as the story unfolds.

If the funeral had been yesterday, I could not recollect it better. The very air of the best parlour, when I went in at the door, the bright condition of the fire, the shining of the wine in the decanters, the patterns of the glasses and plates, the faint sweet smell of cake, the odour of Miss Murdstone’s dress, and our black clothes. Mr Chillip is [past tense: would be was] in the room, and comes [past tense: came] to speak to me.

‘And how is Master David?’ he says [past tense: said] kindly.

I cannot [past tense: could not] tell him very well. I give [past tense: gave] him my hand, which he holds [past tense: held] in his.1
